Athletics projected to shake up its starting rotation by adding former Padres' arm

The Athletics have been quietly building their foundation over the years, and it is starting to pay off. The club is coming off one of its best seasons in years, thanks to the help of some rookies who performed well above expectations.

Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson, and Nick Kurtz all performed well this past season and could build upon their impressive seasons in 2026. However, if the team wants to take the next step, they will have to add some pitching.

The starting rotation did well at times, but it was not as consistent as it needed to be. Expect this club to come out over the next few weeks or months and lock down a formidable starter.

Athletics projected to shake up its starting rotation by adding former Padres' arm

There are quite a few frontline starters on the open market this winter, but a lot of them may be out of the A's price range. They will not be the team pursuing Framber Valdez, but they could redirect their attention elsewhere.

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter believes the team will go after Nick Martinez, putting him right in the middle of its rotation.

"With an impressive young offensive core, building out the starting rotation should be a focal point for the Athletics. However, attracting quality talent could be difficult after how much Luis Severino struggled at home in 2025 after signing a three-year, $67 million deal. Jacob Lopez, Luis Morales, and Jack Perkins all flashed intriguing upside, and rounding things out with veteran swingman Nick Martinez would give them an option to fill multiple roles on the staff."

Not only could Martinez work as a starter, but he also has experience in the bullpen. The A's could use him in both roles, or however they view him, to give them the most potential.

He also would not be someone who would cost the team a ton of money, compared to other free agents on the open market. Therefore, acquiring Martinez is something the fan base should keep an eye on.
