Whether they want to admit it or not, the Houston Astros may soon be turning the page on what's been a highly successful past decade.
The Astros won two World Series (2017, 2022) but have tailed off in recent seasons due to an aging roster and injuries. The AL West club missed the postseason completely in 2025.
Houston is off to a poor start to this season and could become a seller at the trade deadline if things don't start going its way. FanSided's Christopher Kline wrote on Wednesday that trading Yordan Alvarez is not out of the question due to a bad farm system and an older roster.
"Houston has a weak farm system, a clunky payroll, and an older roster that appears to be declining in real time," Kline wrote. "Trading Álvarez would almost guarantee a spot near the bottom of the AL West standings, but with GM Dana Brown and head coach Joe Espada both on the hot seat, it's time for Houston to consider its future. The page may be turning on this current roster and this current era."

Trading Alvarez would also net a handful of prospects and at least a few MLB-ready players. When healthy, the DH is one of the best hitters in baseball.
Alvarez is also under contract through 2028, meaning the Astros may be more inclined to trade him sooner rather than later -- seeking a larger prospect haul than a year from now.
