Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez missed significant time with a right-hand fracture and a left ankle sprain last season.
The injuries limited the three-time All-Star to just 48 games, a major component of Houston's absence from the postseason. Before last year, Alvarez had hit 31 or more home runs in four consecutive seasons, finishing third in AL MVP voting in 2022.
One of Houston's main focuses of spring training will be to ensure he leaves camp healthy. As of now, Astros general manager Dana Brown feels good about Alvarez's status leading into the regular season.
Astros 'giddy' for Opening Day with Alvarez
Brown met with reporters at Daikin Park in Houston on Tuesday and discussed Alvarez's outlook for spring training.
"I think this is probably the best he’s felt in a long time. He’s been doing a lot of workouts, he’s been swinging the bat a lot -- zero concerns at all," the Astros GM told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. "He’s on pace to be ready for Spring Training and that's an exciting part about why we’re so giddy about this season, because we get Yordan for the full season."
"Zero concerns at all" is the most significant part of Brown's statement. The Astros need Alvarez to stay healthy to avoid a second consecutive postseason swing and miss.
