Top seed Aryna Sabalenka will take on third seed Coco Gauff in the final match of the round-robin phase at the WTA Finals 2025.

Sabalenka beat Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-1 in her first match of the group stage. She was up against Jessica Pegula in her next group tie, who recently beat her at the Wuhan Open in three sets. The Belarusian struck first in the opening set to go up a break, and served for the set at 5-3.

However, Pegula saved a set point and broke back to keep herself in contention. Sabalenka brushed that off pretty quickly, breaking her rival's serve in the very next game to capture the set. The American raised her level in the second set, securing a couple of breaks to take the set.

Pegula continued to put Sabalenka in a spot of bother, and was the first to go up a break in the decider for a 2-1 lead. The World No. 1 bagged the next four games to put herself in the driver's seat once again. After a hold of serve by Pegula, Sabalenka served out contest for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win.

Gauff's title defense at the WTA Finals started with a three-set loss to Pegula. She took on Paolini in her next group tie. After squandering her initial break advantage, the American bagged the last two games of the first set to claim it. She cruised to victory in the second set, reeling off five games on the run for a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Sabalenka almost let her emotions derail her gameplay against Pegula. However, she regained her composure and raised her level to beat the American. The forehand was misfiring in the second set and the serve was unreliable as well, yet she willed herself to improve in the decider to get the job done.

Gauff's title defense was off to a dismal start, throwing in 17 double faults during her loss to Pegula. She cut those down to three during her win over Paolini. She's not in the clear just yet, and could still be out of the tournament.

Sabalenka could've qualified for the semifinals with a straight sets win over Pegula. The qualification scenarios in this group are complicated, with a dominant win boosting the winner's odds of getting through the group stage.

Gauff rallied from a set down to beat Sabalenka in the French Open final, their most recent tussle. The latter committed 70 unforced errors in a dramatic match. The American also beat her en route to the WTA Finals title last year.

Even though their rivalry is quite competitive, Gauff's defensive skills have constantly put Sabalenka on the backfoot. As long as the 21-year-old's serve doesn't desert her, she will be favored to come out on top in this match.
