After seven seasons, Panarin, the franchise’s all-time leader in points per game is on the move, officially being traded to the Los Angeles Kings for prospect Liam Greentree and a conditional third round pick. He ends his Rangers career with over 600 points over seven seasons. as New York pivots toward a roster "retool" under general manager Chris Drury.

On Wednesday, just minutes before the NHL's Olympic roster freeze, the Kings acquired Panarin from the Rangers, sending Greentree and a conditional third round pick the other way to New York. Greentree, a 6'3", 215-pound power winger, he was selected 26th overall by the Kings in the 2024 NHL Draft and has spent the 2025-26 season continuing his development in the OHL.

This comes after the Rangers have sidelined Panarin the past few games for "roster management." With the team currently sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and Panarin in the final year of his contract, the front office is opting to recoup assets rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency

Panarin is currently in the final year of the massive seven-year, $81.5 million contract he signed with the New York Rangers back in July 2019. The top free agent on the market at the time signed with the Rangers, passing over larger offers from the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders.

According to NHL insiders, Panarin is looking for another contract extension as he enters the final stages of his career. It's rumored that the winger and his agent want around a $50 million extension at his next destination, likely a four or five-year deal at approximately $10M–$12.5M per season, which would keep him among the highest-paid wingers in the league.
