Arsenal's move for £70m striker derailing with club frustrated over wage demands

5 hours ago 1

Arsenal have yet to officially announce their first signing of the summer, but Martin Zubimendi is close to securing a deal with the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta is also keen on signing a striker with his top target being Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško. The clubs have reportedly struck an agreement, but the issue lies within Šeško's wage demands.

Šeško has been Arsenal's preferred striker target, but reports from SunSport are that the player's camp is demanding wages that Arsenal are not prepared to pay.

Šeško is appealing to Arsenal because of his goal-scoring form and innate ability to find the back of the net. Arsenal have struggled to find the right striker to lead them closer to a trophy.

Arsenal could be forced to turn elsewhere to find a new striker that will meet their ideas on wages.

What other strikers are on Arsenal's radar?

Arteta's second-choice striker is Sporting's Viktor Gyökeres.  The Swedish striker is aware he is not Arsenal's priority but with the Šeško deal stalling, the Swede could be closer to an Arsenal move.

Gyökeres is happy with the wages that Arsenal have offered, which is a good sign for Arsenal should they fail to sign Šeško. Gyökeres is also a sensational scorer, with 39 goals in 33 matches in Liga Portugal.

Another striker that Arsenal have been linked with is Alexander Isak from Newcastle, but Eddie Howe believes he will retain Isak for at least another season.

Ollie Watkins has also received interest from Arsenal, and the Gunners could reignite their interest in the Aston Villa striker this summer. Arteta had a bid rejected for Watkins in January, but now could be the time for Arsenal to spring for the Englishman again.
