Arsenal open 'instant contract talks' with key star after Champions League exit

Arsenal’s exit from the Champions League after a bruising 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on aggregate has now spilled into a fresh off-field battle: locking down William Saliba’s future before Real Madrid move in.

Saliba, who signed a four-year deal in 2023 without a release clause, is tied to the club until 2027. But, inside the club, there’s growing awareness that Madrid’s interest isn’t just talk.

As per Get Football News France via L’Équipe. Real Madrid have been in contact with Saliba’s representatives for weeks. And the Gunner know they can test Arsenal's resolve in 2026, when he enters the final year of his deal, or wait to sign him for free in 2027.

This is why sporting director Andrea Berta has accelerated contract discussions. He has opened talks with Saliba's representatives weeks ago, but the urgency has only grown in the last few days.

According to sources, “Saliba is central to what Arteta is building.” Arsenal don’t want a repeat of previous contract missteps. They’ve learned. They’re acting fast.

The 20-year-old has impressed in La Liga and attracted interest from several top European clubs.

He has played 33 games in La Liga this season and helped Valencia keep seven clean sheets. What stands out is his elite blocking rate—close to 1 per match. That puts him among the best in Spain.

The Gunners are now said to be preparing a formal offer in a bid to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.
