Are fans mocking two-time NBA champion for Victor Wembanyama Lakers trade from Spurs

1 hour ago 3

Los Angeles Lakers broadcaster and two-time NBA champion Mychal Thompson suggested a bolt from the blue on Friday that the San Antonio Spurs might trade star Victor Wembanyama to the Los Angeles Lakers. Basketball fans immediately reacted to the speculation on social media.

Thompson posted his comments after Wembanyama led the Spurs to a 115-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The win occurred in Game 3 of the Western Conference semi-finals last night. Wembanyama recorded 39 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks at the Target Center. San Antonio now holds a 2-1 series lead.

"I wonder if San Antonio wud trade Wemby to the Lakers?" Thompson tweeted.🤔🏀🇧🇸🇺🇸

Supporters rejected the trade idea as a wild goose chase due to San Antonio's 62-20 regular-season record and Wembanyama's crucial role. The 22-year-old is expected to sign a five-year, $252 million maximum contract extension this offseason, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

One fan responded to the rumour by claiming the Spurs would reject an offer.

“We could offer our entire team plus our next 20 first round picks and they would say no,” one fan commented.

Another user suggested that acquiring the French player "would probably cost them Disneyland".

Several others noted Wembanyama will likely finish his career in San Antonio. They drew comparisons to former Spurs players Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

“Wemby will retire a spur like Duncan, manu, paker or Robinson,” a fan reacted. “They already have great team around him at only 22 years old might be on his way to the finals this year.  Spurs know his value and are not dum like nico so no they will not trade him anywhere, we can only wish.”

“Naw, dude is an injury away from retiring like Yao Ming,” one fan wrote. “Good so far and kudos to him for being great this far. he’s a freak of nature. Sad to say but It’s just a matter of time something serious happens.”

“I don’t think they will trade him for anything,” another reacted to this hypothetical trade.

One fan, on this idea of a fool’s paradise, wrote: “We can give them Laravia, Knecht, Ayton and Picks!”

Mychal Thompson's comments carry historical irony

During the 1980s, the Spurs traded Thompson to the Lakers after he played just 49 games for San Antonio. The transfer prompted Boston Celtics star Larry Bird to accuse San Antonio of helping Los Angeles without receiving fair value.

Today, San Antonio operates as a clear championship contender. Their current roster features All-Star De'Aaron Fox and rookie Stephon Castle. Following the Game 3 victory, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson praised Wembanyama.

"He really imposed himself on the game, and I thought he established himself dominating the paint, and the rim, on both ends," Johnson said (h/t Sports Illustrated).

Wembanyama added that playing away matches forces the team to improve their overall performance. The Spurs now prepare for Game 4 as they attempt to extend their series advantage.
