The Texas Longhorns dropped their second straight game to the Florida Gators, and it may be time for a change. The change might come at quarterback.
Redshirt first-year student KJ Lacey Jr. will get more first-team reps at quarterback in practice this week, ESPN's Pete Thamel says.
Texas' offense fell apart late against Oklahoma, and Arch Manning's late interception set up the Sooners' game-winning field goal. The Longhorns led 17-7 at halftime.
Sources: Texas is expected to give an up-tick in first-team quarterback reps to redshirt freshman KJ Lacey Jr. this week in practice. Arch Manning still projects as the Texas starter. The uptick in Lacey’s reps is a signal that Texas could replace Manning if he continues to struggle.
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) October 19, 2026Once again, the Longhorns' offense turned the ball over late. Manning fumbled after a sack with 1:58 left.
In every big game this season, Manning has struggled to protect the ball or find a rhythm. Against Oklahoma, he threw two interceptions; he threw another against Ohio State and another against Tennessee.
With turnovers being a problem, how can any coach not see a change?
Head coach Steve Sarkisian admitted his offense "wasn't playing very good football," and stressed that "nobody was perfect on offense today."
"I don't know how many times I need to say it," Sarkisian said. "We're going to evaluate everything from an offensive perspective. Part of that is play calling."
Texas' offensive struggles continue as they lost their second straight game to an unranked opponent. The starting quarterback for Saturday has not been confirmed, but for now it's still Arch Manning.
The No. 19 Longhorns must find an answer quickly as they will stay at home to play No. 9 Ole Miss on Saturday, October 24 (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC).
