Less than a month after acquiring Trae Young in a blockbuster trade with the Atlanta Hawks, the Washington Wizards have swung for the fences again by acquiring 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis one day before the NBA's trade deadline.
Davis swaps one rebuild for another by moving to Washington after a year with the Dallas Mavericks. The 13-36 Wizards are going nowhere fast this year -- but like the Utah Jazz did on Tuesday by acquiring Jaren Jackson Jr, Washington is loading up for the future and a run at a playoff spot in 2026-27.

Joshua Robbins, the Wizards' beat reporter for The Athletic, said that Washington is not planning to cut Davis or buy him out so he can join a contender. Rather, the Wizards plan to deploy a Davis-Alex Sarr-Bilal Coulibaly frontcourt next year, a group that team brass thinks "can be one of the best defensive frontcourts in the league."
With this trade centered around Anthony Davis, the Washington Wizards are envisioning a frontcourt of Davis, Alex Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly -- a frontcourt that they think can be one of the best defensive frontcourts in the league. I'm told this deal "came out of left field."
— Josh Robbins (@JoshuaBRobbins) February 4, 2026However, Robbins did caution in a separate post that it would be in the Wizards' "interests" to sit Davis for the remainder of the season, the same strategy they are employing with Young.
If Washington has a healthy Davis and Young, while adding a high pick from the loaded 2026 draft, Wizards fans could really have something to look forward to next season.
