Angels sign former Rays, Mets 25 home run hitter

Mike Trout's days in the outfield are numbered, and the Los Angeles Angels would like to protect his legs for the final five years of his 12-year contract.

According to The Athletic's Will Sammon, the AL West club signed center fielder Jose Siri to a minor league contract on Sunday. A left tibia fracture limited him to just 16 games in 2025 with the New York Mets, but he connected for 47 home runs across parts of three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays

Reports indicated that the Angels are comfortable allowing trade acquisition Josh Lowe to receive playing time in center field. Still, he's better suited for one of the corner spots.

How Siri can help the Angels

There's no harm in the Angels' decision to give Siri a chance in spring training. Even if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster, Los Angeles can stash the 30-year-old at Triple-A.

He provides quality defense and has one of MLB's strongest arms from the outfield, averaging 93.5 mph two seasons ago.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports Siri will earn $1.6 million if he earns a Major League roster spot.
