The Los Angeles Angels have been without right-hander Ben Joyce since last April after going on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Joyce made five starts with a 6.23 ERA and ultimately had surgery on his shoulder, ending his season.

After close to a year without Joyce, the 25-year-old made his first rehab appearance on Wednesday for the Angels' Single-A affiliate, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakers.

Manager Kurt Suzuki was happy when he heard the news that Joyce was starting his rehab assignment, calling it “awesome.” The Angels getting Joyce back would be a massive boost, as their bullpen is second-worst in Major League Baseball in ERA (5.58) and saves (four in 13 opportunities).

“It’s awesome,” manager Kurt Suzuki said to MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger. “When they told me that, I was pretty excited, and hearing what he’s been doing in Arizona, this guy’s ready to go out. So I’m excited to see what he’s got and pitching in a rehab assignment game and then go from there.”
