Boston just added a rising star, but he might not be around for long.
On Monday night, the Celtics made a trade featuring Jrue Holiday getting sent to Portland, with Anfernee Simons coming back to Boston. Holiday’s trade felt inevitable after the Celtics’ second-round exit and impending cap issues.
However, the deal was still a bit of a surprise, considering the Celtics’ return. Simons had also been in trade rumors leading up to the deal, but it was still unexpected for the Celtics to get such a talented 26-year-old in a Holiday trade.
After the trade, it seemed like the Celtics had not only gotten cheaper but perhaps gotten better with the swap at point guard. Despite the potential contributions Simons could have in Boston, Brad Stevens might not keep him.
On Wednesday’s Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Shams Charania addressed some of the rumors surrounding the team after the Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis trades. While he said that the Celtics would have to be blown out of the water to send out Jaylen Brown or Derrick White, they could be much more active in looking to move guys such as Simons or Sam Hauser.
Considering Simons is making $27.7 million on an expiring deal next season and just averaged 19.3 points per game last season, his market could be a perfect storm for the Celtics to get great value and help their financial situation further.

While Simons could make a great addition to the Celtics if he makes it to next season, his time in Boston could end without him ever wearing a green uniform.
