Analyst questions Falcons' biggest free agency addition

1 hour ago 4

The Atlanta Falcons and their quarterback situation will be studied for years.

After signing Kirk Cousins to a huge deal, the franchise then drafted Michael Penix in the first round.

Now Cousins is elsewhere, and Penix is rehabbing a torn ACL. Leaving Atlanta with Tua Tagovailoa as the player to fight with Penix for snaps.

It is a chance for Tua to revive his career, and possibly put an end to Penix's in Atlanta.

But ESPN's Liz Loza doesn't like the move for Tua, calling it a head-scratching move.

"The Falcons signing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa," Loza wrote. "Given Michael Penix Jr.'s ACL injury and Kirk Cousins' release, adding Tagovailoa made sense for the Falcons. But it's far from a flex. After all, the Dolphins willingly incurred an NFL-record $99.2 million dead cap hit to release him. That speaks volumes. Though the Falcons' investment in Tagovailoa is relatively low (one-year, $1.3 million deal), it's far from inspiring as a move."

Tua must make most of chance

Tua is fighting for the QB1 spot in Atlanta, that's no secret, but it is one he has to win.

If he can't beat out Penix, who has been so-so in the league since being drafted (small sample size, though), then we wonder if his days as a starter are over.

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold are prime examples of it working out, so Tua will have that as confidence.

But once the offseason program begins, Tua will have to take advantage of anything he can get, because if he doesn't, he might have to be content with being a backup for the foreseeable future.
