The Los Angeles Chargers have been an interesting watch as free agency began, as the franchise added some nice pieces, but didn't go after that big fish.
Still armed with huge amounts of cap space (over $50 million), the Chargers have, so far, sat on their hands to some extent rather than going out and addressing needs on their roster.
That has confused fans, because what is the point of all that cap space if you don't use it?
Well, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer offered interesting insight into L.A.'s approach.
"I think slowly and steadily the roster’s been remade in Harbaugh’s image, and that’s what sustained it last year through a slew of injuries," Breer wrote. "I know every fan base wants to see their team take the big swing and bring in the flashy vet. The Chargers were an 11-win team despite all the attrition. They have their core guys. And with a little internal improvement, some mid-level signings hitting, and improved health, this crew will be a threat in the AFC."

Are Chargers banking on health and internal improvement?
That certainly seems to be the path the Chargers are taking.
The returns of Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt should help immensely, as Justin Herbert was sacked 54 times last season. That can't happen again.
Yes, the Chargers have brought in some nice additions, but rather than banking on the health and improvement of your roster, go out and make some good signings to further fill out the roster.
The Chargers, as Breer stated, won 11 games last year, so it is expected that this is the benchmark in 2026, but banking on player health and in-house improvement isn't exactly the best strategy.
