In an interview with Glamour on Monday, Indiana Fever forward Lexie Hull opened up about DeWanna Bonner’s exit from the team in late June. Hull said that the giddy excitement she felt when the two-time champ signed with the team gave way to confusion after Bonner left. According to the Fever star, the six-time All-Star requested a trade without providing an explanation to her former teammates.
A fan on X seemingly called out Hull for the comment:
“If that lady ever decides to tell her story, it's a lot of people that's gonna wish they had shut the f**k up.”Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner’s Phoenix Mercury teammate and girlfriend, reacted to the post:
“Facts! [laughing emoji]”Bonner was one of the Fever’s marquee signings in the offseason. After five seasons with the Connecticut Sun, she followed coach Stephanie White to the Indiana Fever. The veteran forward opened the season as one of White’s starters before Lexie Hull took over her spot.
The bench role White gave Bonner ended the 6-foot-4 star’s string of starts when healthy. From 2012 until 2024, when she played seven seasons for the Mercury and five for the Sun, she started in 390 of 402 games. After joining the bench mob in Indiana, Bonner sat out five games for “personal reasons.”
DeWanna Bonner eventually asked for a trade, but the Fever had limited options. Bonner reportedly only wanted to join the Mercury to be with Alyssa Thomas. Indiana eventually waived her in June, a move that Bonner appreciated via a message on X.
Lexie Hull says DeWanna Bonner’s departure galvanized Fever
The Indiana Fever developed a never-say-die attitude as the season progressed. Despite season-ending injuries to key players like Caitlin Clark, the Fever showed remarkable grit and resiliency. Indiana pushed the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces to a do-or-die Game 5.
Lexie Hull shared the first adversity that galvanized the Fever:
“To have no explanation was really challenging, but I think that helped us grow closer together because we’re like, ‘All right, this is us. We’re here. We’re going to support each other. We’re loving each other. We’re going to fight for each other. We’re not going to leave. We’re in this together.’”DeWanna Bonner’s split from the Fever worked out for both parties. Indiana thrived in an underdog role all the way to the semifinals. Bonner and Alyssa Thomas led the Phoenix Mercury to the 2025 WNBA Finals, where they lost 4-0 to the Aces.
