The New York Yankees have a catching problem, and they didn't resolve that at Major League Baseball's trade deadline. Not doing so made zero sense, something the Yankees ultimately will have to figure out over the next few months.
For the time being, however, Austin Wells is going to be the guy, and the Yankees have to hope that he can at least be somewhat average.
Most fans have been upset with how Wells has played, and at times, rightfully so. He hasn't done enough to suggest he should be the Yankees' full-time starting catcher, though, again, there really aren't many better options in the system at the moment.
The strange part is that others actually like his game, including one former Yankees legend in Alex Rodriguez, who admitted that while he's having a bad year, he really likes his tools behind the plate.
“The one guy that I do like a lot is Austin Wells. I’m very, very bullish on him. Even though he’s having an off year, he’s tremendous behind the plate. Especially Cole has a very good comfort level around him,” Rodriguez said, H/T Heavy.
The problem with Wells isn't really what he does on the defensive side of the baseball.
He's fine on that side of the plate most days, but the bigger issue is what he does on the offensive side of things. For a guy who has limited offensive success in this league, nobody cares a whole lot about what he does behind the dish. This is an offensive-minded league, and when guys don't produce, there are going to be some comments about it.
