After Week 1 of the NFL preseason got rolling Thursday, the Jets and Buccaneers will open their campaigns with a clash on Friday evening.
The Jets will get to kick off with a preseason opener at home, welcoming the Bucs to MetLife Stadium. Under second-year head coach Aaron Glenn, the franchise has been working on adding younger talent and rebuilding a strong foundation, which could manifest into a better record than last year's 3-14 outcome.
The Bucs are heading into the preseason following some fairly public drama with QB1 Baker Mayfield, who claimed he felt "disrespected" by the franchise's contract offers. Mayfield will still lead the squad for one final year, acting as an anchor especially after the franchise lost wide receiver Mike Evans, but he will not play Friday.
With Mayfield sitting and backup Jacob Browning suffering an injury in practice this week, Jalon Daniels and Connor Bazelak will get the QB reps against the Jets.
