Albert Breer has a specific condition for when 49ers should call about Maxx Crosby

The idea of Maxx Crosby joining the San Francisco 49ers has been floating around long enough to generate real traction.

SI's Albert Breer addressed it directly on Wednesday and didn't dismiss the concept, but he did lay out a clear condition before he'd pull the trigger.

Breer was asked whether the 49ers should pursue the Las Vegas Raiders:

"I love the idea, and I think the 49ers are always open to these types of deals," Breer said. "But if I were them, I think I'd wait a bit before diving all-in. Let's see how that core looks over the first month or two of the season. The last thing you'd want, I think, is to see a bunch of guys get old at once right after you sold off assets you would need to get younger."

He gave a specific scenario that would completely change the calculation.

"But if the Niners are, say, 6-1, and the Raiders are 1-6, and Crosby is balling out, that's where, if I'm John Lynch, I'm thinking about picking up the phone."

Why the 49ers' current roster situation makes timing the Crosby pursuit so critical

Brock Purdy is 26, but the offensive line has key veterans entering the back half of their careers, and the defensive line group Kyle Shanahan built over the last five years faces natural roster turnover.

George Kittle's Achilles tear in January initially raised concerns, but his rapid, setback-free recovery has him targeting a Week 1 return, keeping San Francisco's competitive window wide open.

Crosby is under contract with the Raiders through 2029 and is coming off a season that reaffirmed his standing as one of the game's elite pass rushers.

His availability, like most trade scenarios, depends heavily on what the Raiders are willing to accept and whether their 2026 season produces the kind of futility that makes a deal attractive for both sides.

Breer's idea has merit, but don't compromise the long-term rebuild with a midseason swing before the current core has proven it's ready for one more push. Six games of data is a reasonable threshold. From there, John Lynch makes the call.
