Alabama Crimson Tide football coaching legend Nick Saban undermines Donald Trump’s NIL commission

Alabama Crimson Tide football coaching legend Nick Saban made Donald Trump’s NIL commission sound like a half-baked idea while speaking on it at the Regions Tradition Golf Tournament at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Hoover on Wednesday.

Trump’s plan announced figureheads but hasn’t announced specifics yet. Saban made it clear that even if there was something to announce, he wouldn’t be the guy to do it.

“I don't really know much about this commission. I don't really know what this commission would do. I think we know what needs to be done, I just think we've got to figure out who's got the will to do it. I learned one thing about coaching for all these years that when you get into a subject like this that's very complex, it's probably good not to talk about it off the cuff,” Saban said, per the Tuscaloosa News.

“I'll find out more about it, and if there's something I can do to help college football be better, I'm always going to be committed to do that.”

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger had the ambiguous “mission statement” details provided by a source close to the commission.

“The commission is expected to deeply examine the unwieldy landscape of college sports, including the frequency of player movement in the transfer portal, the unregulated booster compensation paid to athletes, the debate of college athlete employment, preserving the Olympic sport structure, the application of Title IX to school revenue-share payments and, even, conference membership makeup and conference television contracts, those with knowledge of the commission told Yahoo Sports,” Dellenger reported.

Or as Saban would say after reading what Dellenger’s source told him, “whatever that means.”

The future of college football has ranged from a super league setup to being a straight-up NFL feeder system.

Whatever it is, Saban, Cody Campbell, a former Texas Tech player who has served on that school's board of regents, and Trump’s cabinet will discuss it soon.
