The Philadelphia Phillies started the year off on an absolutely terrible note. They've fired Rob Thomson, but they're 4-0 in the Don Mattingly era.
But, things easily could go south from here on out. If they do, some tough questions at the MLB trade deadline might have to be asked.
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand asked MLB executives which player they predict will be the biggest name moved at the MLB trade deadline, and this AL executive predicted Zack Wheeler as the one who could be on the move.
MLB exec predicts Phillies could trade Zack Wheeler
"If Philly can't right the ship, how heavy of a reset will they go through at the deadline?" This AL exec said. "While it hasn't been Dombrowski's style to sell at the Trade Deadline, the organization may have a chance to fully reload for years to come if they make some hard calls in July if a trip to the playoffs is looking bleak."
The Phillies parting with Wheeler would be a true stunner. He's under club control through 2027, and he's been the main subject of the Phillies World Series window.
To trade the player the Phillies have somewhat built their championship window around would be a brutal admission of the current roster's construction.
Sure, they could likely get something decent in return for such a great pitcher. But the Phillies are much better off keeping Wheeler on the roster even if the 2026 season turns into a disaster.

The Phillies can trade some players like Alec Bohm, Adolis Garcia, Bryson Stott, and Brandon Marsh if they feel the need to shake things up at the trade deadline if things are going terribly.
But, even those players shouldn't be dealt if there's even the slightest chance of making the postseason. And if the Phillies can continue to play well as they have against the San Francisco Giants and Miami Marlins, there's zero reason to trade anyone of note.
This MLB executive made a bold prediction that the Phillies could trade Wheeler, but Dave Dombrowski would be foolish to deal the fan-favorite ace.
