It was a moment NBA and college hoops fans alike were waiting for ever since the NBA draft wrapped up. The No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa and the Washington Wizards going up against the No. 2 overall pick Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz.
Of course, the NBA kicked off its Summer Series with this matchup. It makes a statement to kick off the Summer Series with the most talked-about players.
Plus, adding to the drama at the Thomas & Mack Center was the reality that Dybantsa wasn't a shoo-in for No. 1. The Wizards could have easily gone with Peterson or even eventual No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer for that top slot, because all three players are so close in talent. So, did the Wizards make the right decision? That's the question they were hoping to answer.
Who won the AJ Dybantsa vs. Darryn Peterson competition?
So, who won? Frankly, they both did. Both players looked confident on the court and got buckets. Nobody buckled under the pressure of the big lights and their first Summer League game. So, both franchises, and players, should feel good about their picks.
But, Dybantsa did perform a bit better. Dybantsa scored 19 points and four rebounds in the first half of the game, while Peterson had 11 points and two assists in the first half, according to ESPN research.
By the end of the game, Dybantsa had 27 points and seven rebounds, and the Wizards won, 92-88, in Las Vegas. So, he finished strong, but so did Peterson, who closed out the game with 24 points, two rebounds and three assists.
Tre Johnson barely trailed Dybantsa with 26 points, and Will Riley had 18 for the Wizards. For the Jazz, Cody Williams ad 16 points and Trey Alexander had 13.
So, both players should hang their heads high. If this is a preview of what's to come next season, Wizards and Jazz fans are in for a treat.
