Morocco is one of the eight teams currently left at the 2026 World Cup. They have made the quarterfinals for the second consecutive tournament, yet their rise to global prevalence has been shadowed by the frequency of players on the team who were born outside of the country on their chest.
Many have questioned soccer's rules about which players can play for what team, but in Morocco's case, this is fully allowed by the rules.
If a player has Moroccan heritage from their parents, they are able to play for Morocco during international competitions. A whopping 20 of Morocco's 26 total players were born outside of the country, a large portion of them coming from both France and Spain.
Here's the roster rundown on which Moroccan team players were born in France.

In each of those two matches, against Haiti and Canada, the 23-year-old did play the full 90 minutes. Why are French players playing for Morocco?
Players who have a family member originally from Morocco are able to suit up for the Atlas Lions. Many players on Morocco's team have been born outside the country, one of those places being France.
According to Bolavip, 20 players on the Moroccan national team were born outside of the country. Six players each were born in France and Spain, three from Belgium and the Netherlands, and their star goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, was born in Canada.
