Agent for top Mavericks assistants gets honest about futures as Knicks eye Jason Kidd

The agent for two top Dallas Mavericks assistant coaches has gotten honest about their futures with the franchise, as New York Knicks reportedly continue to circle head coach Jason Kidd.

Dallas officially refused to allow New York to interview Kidd, but that hasn't excelled quelled the rumor mill.

Andy Miller, agent to Mavericks assistant coaches Jared Dudley and God Shammgod, spoke about his clients' futures with the organization during a recent Sirius XM NBA Radio conversation.

"Jared Dudley's under contract, so the only way that Jared Dudley would be given permission to leave would be if it were an opportunity to improve his position. Right now, he's sitting in the third assistant [spot]. I don't know what they're going to do with their staff," Miller said (as transcribed by Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News).

Dudley won a title as a player with the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers while Kidd was an assistant on that staff to head coach Frank Vogel.

"I don't really know where Jason is in this process with the Knicks, because I don't really know what the process is with the Knicks... because I don't even know if the Knicks know what the process is," Miller added.

New York infamously fired former head coach Tom Thibodeau earlier this offseason, after a 51-win year and the team's first trip to the Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years. In addition to Kidd, the team has reached out to at least four other teams (the Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls) about interviewing their under-contract head coaches.

"With regard to Shammgod, his contract is up, as well. He's been with the Mavericks, I think seven years. Was hired originally by [former majority owner Mark] Cuban. He's had Rick Carlisle as his head coach," Miller noted. "But he is looking at other situations right now because that may be, for him, an opportunity to better himself in his career."

After making the 2024 NBA Finals with All-Star guards Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Dallas general manager Nico Harrison flipped a package led by Doncic for 10-time former Los Angeles Lakers All-Star center/power forward Anthony Davis, wing Max Christie and a single first round draft pick prior to last season's trade deadline. The Mavericks missed the playoffs this spring, but have stumbled into the No. 1 pick in Wednesday's draft, which the team is expected to use on superstar Duke forward Cooper Flagg.
