ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders will be connected to whatever team selects Shedeur Sanders at the 2025 NFL draft. Schefter warned NFL coaches, minus one notable exception, to be prepared to have thick skin when those rumors start.
“Short of Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin, any other coach who drafts Sanders better be comfortable with his standing within the organization,” Schefter wrote. “Because if that team struggles and the fan base is calling for a coaching change, speculation will start to swirl about Sanders’ father taking over.”
Talk of Sanders leaving Boulder isn’t new. It happened after the Buffs’ 4-8 season in 2023 and then again in January following Coach Prime’s brief flirtation with Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys that didn’t even result in a contract offer.
Before Sanders got his contract extension that now runs through the 2029 season, some claimed leaving Boulder was on the table before the 2025 season even started.
“If Colorado wants to avoid slipping back into mediocrity, matching Coach Prime's salary expectations—closer to those of the top 10 highest-paid coaches—is crucial. Whether Sanders will lead the Buffs into the upcoming season remains to be seen, but the decision will have lasting consequences for the program's future,” Athlon Sports’ Steven Corder wrote.
It didn’t take long for things to change, but it took Colorado a lot to get Coach Prime back in the fold and happy. Handing Robert Livingston an extension, Warren Sapp a promotion, and Marshall Faulk an RB coach job.
Sanders is happy at CU. For now. Things could change quickly.
Would it ever change enough to consider coaching in the NFL? To coach Shedeur and Shilo, Sanders has admitted it could.
