A remastered 3LP deluxe edition of Across the Universe: Music from the Motion Picture is scheduled to arrive Dec. 11. The set brings together 31 recordings made for the 2007 film by its cast, with a tracklist that includes “Girl,” “Come Together,” “Hey Jude” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
The three records are packaged in a tri-fold jacket with an interior landscape montage of drawings by Don Nace and film stills. The set’s 31 tracks include performances by actors Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood, Dana Fuchs and Joe Anderson, alongside appearances from musicians and guests including Bono, Joe Cocker and Eddie Izzard. Sturgess sings “Girl” and “Across the Universe,” while Bono performs “I Am the Walrus” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
Directed by Julie Taymor, Across the Universe uses songs by The Beatles to tell an original story set in the 1960s. The soundtrack’s arrangements were recorded by the film’s cast, recasting familiar songs in performances tied to its characters and narrative. The expanded tracklist also includes songs such as “Dear Prudence,” “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
The film follows Jude, a young man from Liverpool who travels to the United States, and Lucy, an American woman he meets in New York. Their relationship develops amid the social and political upheaval of the era, including the anti-war movement and the Vietnam War.
