After five long years, the wait for another A Court of Thorns and Roses book is finally over. And judging by the numbers, fans were more than ready to return to Prythian.
Sarah J. Maas‘ A Court of Splintered Harmony, the sixth installment in her bestselling romantasy series, hit shelves Tuesday, Oct. 27, and has already made publishing history. According to Variety, the novel sold a staggering 1.7 million copies on its release day, breaking Maas’ previous record and marking a 600% increase over the first-day sales of 2021’s A Court of Silver Flames.
Early reader reactions have also been enthusiastic, with fans saying they “need more now” and praising how easily the story “keeps you engaged.”
Luckily, they won’t have to wait another five years for the next chapter. A Court of Forgotten Melody, the seventh installment, is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2027, less than three months after Book 6’s release. Book 6 is available to shop now, while Book 7 is available to preorder through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Bloomsbury.
The two novels introduce The Valkyrie Cycle, a new chapter in the fantasy saga that began with A Court of Thorns and Roses in 2015. According to the publisher’s official synopsis, Book 6 follows a growing threat from Koschei the Deathless, whose potential return puts Prythian’s already fragile alliances to the test.
And if the title A Court of Forgotten Melody sounds particularly musical, that’s fitting for an author whose stories have long been shaped by what she’s listening to.
Maas has previously discussed her love of classical music and film scores, which help her imagine everything from individual characters to entire scenes. In fact, she has been known to organize her writing playlists chronologically, creating a soundtrack that follows the events of her books.
For readers, there’s another way to experience that cinematic quality. GraphicAudio offers dramatized adaptations of the existing ACOTAR novels, complete with full-cast performances, music and sound effects that bring the Night Court to life.
Meanwhile, the sixth installment is currently available in hardcover for a list price of $22, while the seventh carries a $38 list price. Readers can also choose digital editions.
What Is the ‘ACOTAR’ Series About? A Spoiler-Free Summary
For anyone new to Prythian, A Court of Thorns and Roses follows Feyre Archeron, a 19-year-old human huntress whose life takes an unexpected turn after she kills a wolf in the woods. What follows is an introduction to a magical world ruled by powerful faeries, where ancient curses, dangerous bargains and forbidden romance are only the beginning.
Inspired by fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast, the series blends high fantasy with romance, political intrigue and plenty of morally gray characters. Across five books, Maas expands the world of Prythian, introducing readers to its seven courts, complicated alliances and an unforgettable cast of characters.
The series currently includes five published installments, beginning with A Court of Thorns and Roses and ending with 2021’s A Court of Silver Flames.
