It appears that Aaron Rodgers owes New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields a thank you.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Rodgers is now the starting QB of the Pittsburgh Steelers, in part, because Fields decided to sign with the Jets instead of returning to Pittsburgh.
Yes, the Steelers prioritized re-signing Fields over pursuing Rodgers, according to Schefter. Fields opted to ink a two-year, $40 million deal with New York.

— Paul Andrew Esden Jr (@BoyGreen25) June 6, 2025It seemed odd that the Steelers would just let Fields walk in free agency, considering the success he flashed during his limited time as a starter. He registered a 4-2 record, and while he wasn't an elite passer as Pittsburgh's QB1, he proved that his dynamic skill set as a runner can lead an offense to points and, ultimately, wins.
Now, the Rodgers-led Steelers will battle Fields and the Jets in Week 1 in what's quickly becoming a script meant for Hollywood.
Rodgers' miserable two seasons with Gang Green were lowlighted by a ruptured Achilles in his first start as a Jet and a disappearance into a darkness retreat that led many Jets fans to wonder if he still had a passion for the game.
After dragging out his decision to sign with the Steelers for as long as he did, those questions only grew louder.
Fortunately for Gang Green, that's Pittsburgh's problem now.
