Aaron Judge clearly wasn't seeing the ball very well last night.
The New York Yankees right fielder is the back-to-back MVP of the American League, but he probably imagined Opening Day going differently in his head.
The Yankees easily handled the San Francisco Giants 7-0, but Judge went 0-for-5 at the plate with four strikeouts.
Judge achieved a "golden sombrero," which baseball players and fans call a batter after they strike out four times in one game. Judge's forgettable feat surpassed five former MVPs for an Opening Day record.
Judge surpasses Trout, Sosa
"Aaron Judge is the first reigning MVP to strike out 4X in his team's first game of the season," MLB.com's Bryan Hoch wrote on Wednesday night on X.
Hoch noted that the previous Opening Day strikeout record for reigning MVPs was three, accomplished by Willie Stargell (1980), Sammy Sosa (1999), Mike Trout (2015), Josh Donaldson (2016), and Kris Bryant (2017).
Trout is safe from tying Judge's record, as the last time he won MVP was in 2019. Bryant will start the season on the injured list for the Colorado Rockies.
Before last night, the last time Judge had struck out four times in a single game was September 28, 2024.
