Aaron Glenn promises Jets fans there’s a plan to lead them out of darkness

After losing a third straight game by more than 20 points, Jets coach Aaron Glenn had a message Monday for fans who may be disillusioned by his team’s 3-12 record.

“For the fans, listen, it’s going to be a tough road, and we knew that, but man, the thing is we know exactly what we’re doing, and we do have a plan,” Glenn said. “Don’t let go of the rope, I will say that.”

Many fans want to see the Jets lose games to improve their position in next April’s NFL Draft. But even those fans may be a little shocked at just how bad the Jets have looked lately.

The Saints came into Sunday’s game having won just four games and missing several key pieces on offense. Still, they beat the Jets 29-6 after dominating them in the second half.

There was a lot of hope when Glenn was hired in January, but any hopes of the team being a playoff contender or even a .500 team vanished with an 0-7 start. They stabilized after that to win three out of five games but now are back in a losing skid that could stretch to five to end the season. If the Jets finish 3-14, it will be just the third time in franchise history the team has lost that many games.

Despite all the losing this season, Jets owner Woody Johnson has shown patience with Glenn, and the coach is expected to return in 2026 for his second season. He did inherit a 5-12 team that had roster flaws, most notably at quarterback.

Glenn has spent his first season trying to build a new culture inside the Jets, an area he where he does see progress.

“From Day 1, we’ve been trying to set the foundation of what we want this team to be, and a lot of that is from in-house perspective for the most part,” Glenn said. “You still have a number of things that you have to go through as far as, man, making sure that everybody understands exactly what you’re trying to accomplish, what type of team you want to be, and our guys know that. They do.”

Glenn praised the effort from the players in Sunday’s loss in New Orleans, both after the game and then again Monday. He pointed to that when asked about specific ways he sees growth in his program.

“I think there’s a lot of honesty that goes on with conversations that we have, and I think there’s a belief that, listen, we know that there’s a direction, we know there’s a plan, and the players understand that,” Glenn said. “And usually, when you have that, man, you get the effort that you want. And again, I thought yesterday we had a ton of effort because the players believe what we have going on.”

The Jets are going to undergo massive changes in the offseason. The team is projected to have around $90 million in salary cap space and has two first-round and two second-round draft picks. The big question is what the team will do at quarterback, but the Jets have more needs than just a new signal-caller.

The Jets players know Glenn is just laying the foundation for what he hopes the team can be in the future.

“I believe in AG. I believe in his plan,” cornerback Brandon Stephens said Monday. “I believe he’s looking for guys that want to be part of this change.”

The Jets finish the season with two AFC East rivals. They play the Patriots this week and the Bills in the season finale. This week’s game with the 12-3 Patriots is the final home game of the season for the Jets. They have won two home games this season and no divisional games.

“We plan on going out there and playing our best and giving effort,” Glenn said. “We plan on going out there and winning the game also, all right? We do. We want to go out there and put on a good show for our fans. We know it’s our last home game. We look forward to it.

“We know it’s a really, really good opponent, so there’s nothing better than us going out there and probably spoiling what they’re trying to accomplish as a team and making sure our last game is a game our fans can remember.”
