The New York Jets are 3-12, and with little time left to go this season, their focus is on 2026 and beyond.
With that in mind, the Jets need to decide on their starting quarterback for Weeks 17 and 18. While Tyrod Taylor is active and could start, Justin Fields is yet to be 100%, and was previously benched.
That's why the report from Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, that Aaron Glenn announced undrafted rookie free agent Brady Cook as the starter for Week 17, is hardly a surprise.
Jets announce Brady Cook to start in Week 17
"Brady Cook will remain the Jets' starting quarterback, Aaron Glenn said." Rosenblatt shared on Monday morning.
While the 3-12 Jets aren't going to make the playoffs, there's a lot of reason to pay attention to what they do the rest of the season.
Cook might not give the Jets the best chance to win, but he could prove something down the final two weeks of the season, starting in Week 17 when the Jets face the New England Patriots.
He likely won't emerge as a franchise quarterback for the Jets, but he could become the team's backup in 2026 with a decent finish to the year.
In Week 16 against the New Orleans Saints, Cook went 22-of-35 for 188 yards with no touchdowns, one interception, and five sacks taken for 54 yards lost. He also ran the ball once for two yards.

So far, Cook, through three weeks of play, has 527 passing yards with one touchdown, six interceptions, and a 0-3 record.
Even if Cook isn't the best option for the Jets down the stretch to win the team games, their most important task the rest of the year is to lose out and have as good a chance to land the number one overall pick as possible.
Glenn is sticking with Cook for Week 17 despite his struggles this season, and Taylor is healthy enough to be the backup.
The Jets' plan is clearly to aim for the future, as the team's final two weeks against the Patriots and Buffalo Bills don't mean a lot to Glenn and the Jets.
