When Aaron Donald announced his retirement in March 2024, he filmed a short video that captured exactly where he stood. Ten Pro Bowls. Eight All-Pros. Three Defensive Player of the Year awards. A Super Bowl ring. He recited the list and then explained why none of it was pulling him back.
"I'm burned out. I'm full. I'm complete. I'm satisfied with what I was able to do in ten years," Donald said in the clip, which resurfaced widely on Tuesday after the Myles Garrett trade. "I think the passion to play the game is no longer there for me. I will always love football, but to think about going through another camp and another 17-game season... I just don't got the urge to want to push myself to do that no more."

He was 32. He walked away from the Rams on his own terms, the only franchise he ever played for, and said it was time to move on.
What Donald said and what insiders reported after the Garrett trade announcement
The Browns trading Garrett to the Rams on Monday created immediate speculation about whether Donald would consider coming out of retirement to form a pass-rush combination with the two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Pat McAfee reached out to Donald directly and reported the response Monday night.
"It for sure got me thinking," McAfee said Donald told him. "35, removed two years ago, gotta see if that fire can light back up."
NFL insider Jordan Schultz corroborated the report with a text message Donald sent him on the same subject.
I texted Aaron Donald about coming out of retirement and playing for the Rams, alongside Myles Garrett:
“I’m for sure flirting with the idea. Helluva an opportunity with the Super Bowl in SoFi this year. If I can find the fire, it’s a possibility.” pic.twitter.com/T94zbgdhgs
"I'm for sure flirting with the idea," Donald texted Schultz.
No formal talks with the Rams have been reported. Donald has not issued a public statement about a return. His wife, Erica, who was present for the original retirement interview, has also weighed in publicly, commenting on Fox's senior writer Armando Salguero's post on X, saying, "Y’all are hilarious."

— Erica Donald (@EriDon_99) June 2, 2026He is now 35 and has been out of the league for over two years. The physical toll of returning from that length of retirement would be significant, and the Browns' contract with Garrett still being absorbed into the Rams' cap structure could complicate any potential deal further.
