Announced exclusively at IGN earlier this week, bestselling co-writers Mark Elijah Rosenberg (Approaching the Unknown, Year Million) and Matthew Rosenberg (We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank) are teaming up with Andy Macdonald (Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman) colorist Francesco Segala, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou for an action-packed, sci-fi adventure in the upcoming If Destruction Be Our Lot.
Launching this May, If Destruction Be Our Lot follows a robotic replicant of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. That alone should hook potential readers. But for those who want more story details:
In If Destruction Be Our Lot, humanity is extinct and all that remains are the robots who once helped us.The robots are happier now, doing their work without human interference. But not Abe, a robotic replicant of Abraham Lincoln in search of meaning beyond the daily grind. Abe believes there must be something more out there beyond the edge of the city. After nearly getting killed, he’s determined to wander the Earth until he finds it… or gets recycled trying.
As revealed in IGN’s exclusive coverage, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the series was very much inspired by current discussions surround artificial intelligence.
“As someone coming into comics from the film industry, I’ve been dazzled by the creative possibilities,” said Mark Rosenberg. “And we’re making something that feels important to us because it deals with real issues through a totally bizarre metaphor, but in the end it’s all about the search for one primal, universal thing: friendship. Even if it’s only with a talking toaster.”
Matthew Rosenberg added: “This is a story I’ve wanted to tell for a long time. But working on it for the last few years it has really become something so much bigger, funnier, sadder, weirder, and more hopeful than I ever could have dreamt. And getting to make it with two of my favorite old collaborators, Andy, and Hassan, one of my favorite new collaborators, Francesco, and my favorite brother, Mark, has been one of the highlights of my career.”
“My hatred of A.I. is matched only by my love for weird little robots,” said MacDonald. “So getting to make a comic about a weird guy looking for meaning in a world that has left him behind is both prescient and incredibly fun. I can’t wait for people to enter our world of lonely robots.”
The series will also feature eye-popping variant covers by such artistic titans as Jerome Opeña, James Harren, Tradd Moore, and more.
