Anne Hathaway Shares How “Soulmate” Adam Shulman Helped Shape Her 'Odyssey' Character

Oh don’t be ridiculous, Andrea. Everybody wants this—a relationship like the one Anne Hathaway has with husband Adam Shulman.

No, no, that wasn’t a question, and neither is the way The Devil Wears Prada star feels about the jewelry designer.

"I am one of the luckiest people on the planet Earth," Hathaway told E! News’ Justin Sylvester at the July 14 New York premiere of her new movie The Odyssey, in which she stars alongside Matt Damon as Odysseus' wife Penelope. "I met my soulmate, and we decided to get married and have a family, and I have that in common with my character."

The Odyssey is one of her five films to come out in 2026—with others including upcoming Verity and The End of Oak Street as well as the already-released Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Add that to Shulman’s own career in jewelry and producing, their raising of 10-year-old Jonathan and 6-year-old Jack and preparation for baby no. 3, and you could say the couple has been moving at anything but a glacial pace.

"The way he stepped up, I mean in every possible way, he’s the most extraordinary person I’ve ever met," Hathaway told People in April. "And I’m so lucky that he’s my partner that I spend my life with. And if I didn’t know that before this past year, I really know it now."

So if you’re still wondering if they’re meant for each other, please bore someone else with your questions.

"It’s one thing to have dreams, it’s another thing to have somebody who helps you achieve them," the Oscar winner added. "And I absolutely would not be able to have achieved what I’ve done without my husband."

The runway of Hathaway and Shulman’s relationship extends back to 2008 when they were introduced through friends. Like florals for spring, this meet-cute may not seem groundbreaking. But fans might be surprised to learn how their romance bloomed.

"Someone told me he had a girlfriend, so I backed off," Hathaway recalled on The Late Show With David Letterman in 2012. "Found out, I think it was six weeks later, that he didn’t have a girlfriend. So then I asked him if he wanted to go to New Orleans with me."

Heading to the Big Easy for a screening of her film Rachel Getting Married, Hathaway had an extra ticket. And since her best friends in L.A. couldn’t go, she thought Shulman would be a good plus-one. Still, the pals of The Princess Diaries alum didn’t exactly bow down to the idea right away.

"My friends said, 'Well, what happens if it goes badly?'" she added. "I said, 'If it goes badly, then we’ll never see each other again. And if it goes well, we’ll probably get married.'"

And they did—tying the knot in September 2012. They have some stellar symbols of their marriage too: matching tattoos.

Noting the "idea is that individually we’re whole but together we’re more," Hathaway explained of the design on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2023, "I don’t expect him to complete me, and I don’t think he expects me to complete him. He’s his own person, I’m my own person, and we choose to be together because we believe we make each other better and this union is something we both want to participate in."

Three and a half years after saying "I do," the pair welcomed son Jonathan in March 2016. And just like with her onscreen work, Shulman has nothing but praise for Hathaway’s role as a mom.

"She always amazes me," the 45-year-old raved to People in 2016. "As a mother, she is gorgeous."

Little brother Jack came three years later. And soon, Hathaway and Shulman will be celebrating the arrival of their family's newest cast member—with her announcing her pregnancy on Instagram in June.

"We were so shocked it went this way," the 43-year-old said on Late Night With Seth Meyers July 14. "So, we’re calling this one our buzzer beater."

But for now, Hathaway and Shulman are just enjoying life as a family of four.

The kids are "in this really fun zone where we all love hanging out together, which I understand may change. Well, we will always love hanging out with them, but their feelings about us might change," Hathaway told ELLE in May. "So for the moment, we’re all just in it. Adam and I are soaking it up. I’m having the most wonderful time with my family, living in the city of my dreams, and work seems to be going really, really well."

So does her marriage as Hathaway and Shulman remain enchanted with each other.

"My whole thing about marriage is…it’s such a big deal to share your life with someone. You know? Because it’s yours," Hathaway added. "It’s fully yours to do anything you want with. And so to find someone who inspires you to say, ‘As great as this is on my own, sharing it with you feels like it could lead to somewhere even better.’ I imagine that actually is rare, and I do feel like I found that and I don’t take it for granted."
