The Dallas Mavericks stunning decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers is one that still has fans scratching their heads, even now that both teams have seen their 2024-25 seasons come to an end. The guy who has taken the most heat for this deal is Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, and fans' hatred for him has reached new heights.
On Feb. 2, the Mavericks decided to trade Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The deal was met with immediate backlash from Dallas' perspective, as their decision to trade Doncic was criticized, and the return they received was viewed as subpar.
Doncic has been quite vocal in expressing his confusion over the deal, saying he was heartbroken to have been traded, and that he intended on playing his entire career with the Mavericks. He clearly isn't too happy with Harrison, who kept everyone, including Doncic, in the dark about this deal until it was finally completed.
As a result, the latest development in this saga shouldn't necessarily come as a surprise. A Mavs jersey with the words "Fire Nico" on the back that has allegedly been signed by Doncic has hit an online auction site, and the price has already soared above $1,000.
"When Doncic returned to the American Airlines Center to face off against the Mavericks on April 9, the home crowd chanted "Fire Nico," in response to Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison's decision to trade the generational talent. Offered is a Nike Swingman size 48 #77 "Fire Nico" jersey, signed in black marker by Doncic across the number "7" on the jersey's back," the description on the website "Goldin" reads.
The Mavericks nearly fell apart in the wake of this trade, as a slew of injuries torched their team. They managed to find their way into the play-in tournament, but they were eliminated in the second game by the Memphis Grizzlies after they beat the Sacramento Kings in their first contest.
The Lakers, meanwhile, soared to new heights with the addition of Doncic, finishing as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. The good vibes didn't last, though, as they were eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games during their first-round series, sending them into an extremely important offseason earlier than expected.
