The best recliners have a laid-back history — pun totally intended — which is why they’re such a furniture staple.
Allowing you to sit back and relax while watching your favorite show off your smart TV, the popular built-in footrest was born around 1850, when the French military introduced the modern-day recliner that had 3-in-1 benefits: serving as a chair, a chaise lounge, and a bed.
While accent chairs are all the rage (and we love them too), there’s just something about a recliner that’s second to none. For a night of relaxation — perhaps with one of the best blankets we reviewed and a cup of tea — you’ll adore kicking your feet up and simply relaxing.
Additionally, recliners are great options for those with limited mobility. Offering comfort and a place to elevate your legs and feet, it’s the ultimate seating option for those with joint pain issues.
Ahead, find the best recliners that we want to cuddle up in. Whether you’re preparing for your latest home reno or simply need another furniture piece, we’re inclined to say these recliners are the real deal.
Best Recliner Sofa: McClelland Oversized Recliner Sofa

Pros:
- By far, the most plush couch we’ve experienced
- Fair price point, especially considering the quality
- Extra-wide seats, which are perfect for cuddling with your S.O.
Cons:
- Some may find the material too fuzzy, which may not fare well in hotter climates
- Doesn’t automatically recline
NY Post Review: When moving into a new house, a new couch was certainly at the top of my to-buy list. Though I love the look, I didn’t find leather or ‘pleather’ options to be all that cozy, along with some microfiber blends. I was on the hunt for something I could sink into, almost like my mattress, for nights when I’m binge-watching ‘Love is Blind’ (which, BTW, is all the time).
When I came across the McClelland Reclining Sofa, I was sold. It stood out from the other couches my fiancé and I sat on at brick-and-mortar furniture stores — which was plenty. This one had a soft-to-the-touch feel that we instantly loved, extra-wide seats that make for a more comfortable experience, and a fair price tag; spending less than $1,000 for this type of recliner is incredible, as we visited a custom-recliner retailer that quoted us around $5,000 for the exact same material and size.
While it’s manual and not automatic, it’s not at all a deal-breaker for me. Its gray color matches with a variety of home aesthetics and pairs exceptionally well with the Benjamin Moore “Balboa Mist” paint color that I recently coated onto my walls.

It also fits oversized throw pillows as well. Shortly after ordering my couch, I picked up a few of them from HomeGoods and was instantly pleased with the overall look. Not to mention, Raymour & Flanigan has the best customer service and delivery I’ve experienced. The team quickly shipped my order and installed it within 10 minutes.
On that note, I actually ordered this couch from another retailer (that shall remain nameless) with horrible customer service. When my couch was continually delayed a week longer every time I called to check in, I ultimately canceled and swiftly ordered the same model from Raymour & Flanigan. The retailer saved the day and kept my move-in plans on track, and I’ll stand by them for most furniture and decor purchases moving forward.
Dimensions: 93″ L x 39″ W x 40″ H | Type: Manual | Fabric: Polyfill | Key features: Coil Spring System for comfort
Editor’s Note: The McClelland Oversize Manual Recliner is no longer available at Raymour & Flanigan but is currently available at Ashley Furniture.
Best Push-Back: Canora Grey Sandee Push-Back Recliner

Pros:
- Luxurious, tufted cushions
- Affordable, appealing to a wide variety of shoppers
- High-back design
Cons:
- May be too formal for certain design styles
Hello, tufted details! We can’t stop staring at the Canora Grey Sandee Push-Back Recliner — a fairly priced option that looks like it belongs in the set of “Gossip Girl.” It comes in a few other colors, too, and has a stain-resistant fabric coupled with a gorgeous look.
Upholstered in soft, durable fabric, this recliner features a timeless pattern and a neutral color palette, making it a versatile addition to any living room, study or home office. The chair’s sleek, high-back design and subtly tapered legs give it a refined, sophisticated look, while its plush cushioning provides superior comfort for long hours of relaxation
I love how it offers the perfect marriage of style and function, especially for the price.

It’s the perfect solution for those who love the minimalist aesthetic but also want something practical. Not to mention, two seats offer a better entertaining experience than your run-of-the-mill accent chair.

Best Rocking Reclining: JONPONY Massage Swivel Rocker Recliner

Pros:
- Fully reclines
- Heat function
- Soft upholstery
- Cupholders
- Two vibration strengths
This Walmart bestselling rocking recliner is plush, cozy, and exactly what you’ll want to nap in on a lazy day. Along with swiveling and heat in the lumbar section, it offers a soothing massage. It’s not too large, so if you’re on the taller side, it may not be a good fit, but it’s worth considering if you have a smaller space or are not in the market for a bulky chair. It comes with a remote control that’s fairly easy to use, and the massager has five different vibrations to move between.
Dimensions: 34.3”W x 29”D x 40.2”H | Type: Manual | Fabric: Upholstered | Key features: Lumbar support, Heat, Massager
Best Recliner for Back Pain: Flexispot Lotus Swivel Rocker Recliner

Pros:
- Stylish, modern design
- Available in manual, as well as electric
- 136-degree tilt
- Pillow-like cushions
- Under $500
This may be one of the most stylish recliners we’ve ever come across. Most importantly, it’s comfortable and forgiving on the spine and lower back. The seat is wide enough so you can sit cross-legged if you choose, plus the pillow-like back cushion is soft and supportive. If you want a 360-degree swivel and rocking, select it in manual. If pushing or pulling causes more pain, go with the electric style that offers the features at 270 degrees. The recliner can also be ordered with a photo holder, so you can easily view your phone without holding it ( and incidentally, straining your neck), plus it also has a USB port for your charging needs.
Dimensions: 42.1” H x 38.6” W x 39.8” D | Type: Manual, Electric | Fabric: PU Leather | Key features: Can be ordered with phone holder, USB port
Best Nursery Recliner: Best Choice Products Electric Power Lift Linen Recliner Massage Chair

What I like about this specific recliner is that it adjusts into three positions for a more customized sitting experience. The leg rest lifts, while the heavy-duty base has an anti-tip function for extra durability. It’s just the thing you’ll want to sit on while nursing, singing to your baby or trying to escape the in-laws.

Best Recliner for Neck Pain: Bellanest Novah Zero Gravity Power Recliner

Pros:
- Adjustable headrest
- Plush seat and back cushions
- Power reclines, so the user can avoid straining
- USB port
- Removeable back
Cons:
- May be too large for smaller spaces
The Bellanest Novah Zero Gravity Power Recliner is our pick for those with neck and joint pain, mainly for its adjustable headrest. It’s cushy and supportive, offering comfort after a long day of staring at your computer screen. The chair’s control buttons are on its side, which we slightly prefer to a remote, which always runs the risk of being lost unless it comes with an attaching cord. Capable of holding up to 350 pounds, the deep seat offers lots of space, while the elevated foot rest takes pressure off legs, promoting circulation. While there are no massage or heat features, the durability and make of the recliner make it a favorite of ours and other shoppers.
What customers are saying: “The most comfortable recliner I have ever owned — absolutely love it.”

Your shopping guide to recliners
Ahead, the Post Wanted team laid out the 411 on what to look for in your next recliner purchase.
- Cushioning and upholstery: Sit in the recliner to test the comfort level. The cushions should provide adequate support without being too hard or too soft. Consider the fabric as well; leather, microfiber and fabric each have different feels and durability. Leather tends to be more durable but can be pricier, while fabric may be more breathable but wears out faster.
- Padding and support: Look for a recliner with good lumbar and neck support, especially if you plan to use it for long periods. Adjustable headrests and footrests are ideal for customized comfort, though may be more expensive.
- Manual versus power-reclining options: Manual recliners are often less expensive and more traditional, requiring you to pull a lever or push back with your body weight. Power recliners, while pricier, allow you to adjust the position with a button or remote control, providing smoother and more customizable positioning.
- Design and color: Recliners come in a wide variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary. Choose one that matches your existing furniture and decor. Upholstery choices like leather, faux leather and fabric come in various colors and textures, so consider the aesthetics of your home before ordering.
How We Tested

While the Post Wanted team hasn’t tested dozens of recliners, here’s what we kept in mind when putting some models to the test at local furniture stores:
- Comfort: What’s the most comfortable recliner to us may look different to you, so it’s important to understand the materials and what you prefer. Do you want something with a sturdier frame, or something super plush that you can sink into? These are factors to consider.
- Reclining options: Much to our newfound knowledge, recliners are clad with differing mechanisms to elevate the footbed. Whether the recliner is automatic, power-reclining or manual can impact usability and price.
- Value and price: Of course, budgets look different for everyone, though some furniture pieces are *really* worth the cost. We shopped around and realized that leather options — especially sectional options with more seating — are more costly.
