The San Francisco 49ers have had some brutal ends to playoff runs, and while this past year's blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks stung, it was far from the worst exit.
Their Super Bowl losses will always sting, but one of the worst playoff losses was the NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. Brock Purdy and then backup quarterback Josh Johnson both got hurt, leaving the 49ers without a QB.
Purdy suffered an arm injury, while Johnson suffered a concussion. But, as Johnson shared on Ross Tucker's podcast, the injury was a lot worse than initially known, as the 49ers QB shared the shocking truth behind his head injury from the NFC Championship game.
Josh Johnson shares shocking truth behind NFC Championship game injury vs. Eagles
Johnson revealed that, "most people don't know that I was double-concussed in that game." He didn't suffer just one concussion, but two. After those injuries, Johnson revealed that, "I ended up with a brain bleed."
According to Johnson, he first suffered a concussion on his second play, when he was sacked by Haason Reddick. His head hit the ground, and he suffered his first concussion. But he stayed in the game and continued playing for a little while.
Then, in the third quarter, Johnson was hit by Ndamukong Suh, suffering a concussion, which got him pulled from the game thanks to intervention from a referee. He got tests on the sideline and, after failing, was sent to the locker room.

"We flew back from Philly, one of the worst flights of my life," Johnson said. "I never felt as uncomfortable as I felt on that plane ride. Got back to San Fran, went home, did exit meetings the next day... then two days later, I almost passed out in the shower, and my wife called the team, and she was like 'something's not right.'"
"And so when I got my MRI, that's when they figured out I had a brain bleed," Johnson revealed. "The bleeding got into my spine to the point where I couldn't touch my toes. Three days ago, I felt like one of the better athletes in the world, then three days later, I cannot even touch my toes.
It's a shocking update on his injury from the NFC Championship. One concussion is already bad enough, but to suffer two, and then deal with brain bleeding, is a scary and horrific outcome for Johnson.

Before that brutal injury, Johnson had been in the NFL for well over a decade and hadn't suffered a concussion. To then suffer two in the same game, and then have to deal with a very scary brain bleed, is a horrific outcome for Johnson.
While his concussion was known, this update from Johnson that he sustained two concussions and an eventual brain bleed is a shocking update on his injury from the NFC Championship game.
Fortunately, he recovered and was able to play in the NFL again despite such a scary injury. The 39-year-old is still playing in the NFL, an impressive feat considering how terrible the injury he suffered was in the NFC Championship game against the Eagles.
