49ers' Mac Jones gets firm trade update ahead of 2026 NFL Draft

For the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, there's been plenty of rumors about players and picks that could be on the move. The San Francisco 49ers are one of the teams that have been mentioned in those trade rumors.

But a lot of those talks have revolved around Brandon Aiyuk, their disgruntled wide receiver who's all but certain to part with the team this offseason. What about Mac Jones, the backup quarterback who's been mentioned in trade rumors this offseason?

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers' backup quarterback to Brock Purdy got a firm trade update ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft that points to the former first-round pick sticking in San Francisco for now.

49ers get firm trade update on Mac Jones

"One quarterback not expected to go anywhere is San Francisco's Mac Jones, whose market never heated up this offseason," Schefter reports.

This is not a surprising report at all. Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers have made it known they won't simply trade Jones this offseason in the last year of his absolute steal of a two-year deal.

Jones is 27 years old and coming off a 2,151-yard season with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in relief of Purdy this past season.

Teams in need of quarterback help, whether it's as a starter like the Pittsburgh Steelers or competition like the Cleveland Browns, would surely be interested in Jones if he were available.

And while the 49ers aren't going to shut down all trade talks, their asking price must be incredibly high for teams to balk on trading for a potential starting quarterback.

Schefter's report indicates the 49ers are not going to be trading Jones during the upcoming NFL Draft. While there might be interest from other teams, Jones looks set to remain in San Francisco for now, and at least through the NFL Draft.
