49ers-Giants blockbuster trade rumor gains steam after Broncos release $31 million starter

There have been wild trade rumors circulating in recent days involving the San Francisco 49ers, linebacker Fred Warner, and the New York Giants.

And that rumor may have just gained a little steam after the Denver Broncos made a roster move on Monday.

The trade rumor involving Warner and the Niners was first reported by Giants beat writer Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, who said that San Francisco might consider dealing Warner if they can get linebacker Dre Greenlaw back.

"I don’t know if San Francisco will trade Warner. Heard they might consider it if somehow they could get Dre Greenlaw back in the fold," Stapleton reported.

Then, Easton Butler of Packers Report revealed that the Niners have been getting calls on Warner, with the Giants being among those teams.

"The 49ers have been receiving calls about LB Fred Warner, with the Giants being one of the calls, per source," Butler reported.

Now, on Monday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Broncos are releasing Greenlaw, which puts him in play to return to the 49ers.

This entire situation feels odd, to say the least, and we are extremely skeptical of all of it.

But if what Stapleton reports is accurate, this now opens the door for the Niners to reunite with Greenlaw, which in turn could put a Warner trade in play.

While the Giants did address linebacker on Monday with the signing of Tremaine Edmunds, they still have another vacancy with Micah McFadden unsigned.

All that said, it remains hard to fathom that the Niners would trade the heart and soul of their defense.

Crazier things have happened, but we'll believe it when we see it.
