49ers get Philip Rivers news for Week 16 game vs. Colts

The talk of the league over the past week has been about the Indianapolis Colts bringing back future Hall of Fame quarterback Philip Rivers to help revive their chances at success in 2025.

With just a handful of days to prepare, head coach Shane Steichen gave the 44-year-old the starting nod in Week 15. Although the Colts ended up losing to the Seattle Seahawks with a final score of 18-16, Rivers showed some hope.

On Monday, Coach Steichen revealed that Rivers will be getting the start once again for Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16, according to senior NFL insider Adam Schefter.

What to expect from Philip Rivers

Rivers held his own going up against the Seattle Seahawks, who have one of the best defenses in all of football this season.

With less than a week of preparation, Rivers completed 18-of-27 pass attempts for 120 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Although the numbers weren't attractive, the Colts had a chance at winning up until the final seconds.

Now, Indianapolis will play host to the San Francisco 49ers next week.

San Francisco will be another tough game for the veteran quarterback, but their defense hasn't been as lock-down as Seattle's has been.

The 49ers are ranked 18th in yards given up per game (333.6) this season and 11th in points per game (20.9). Both of which are worse than what Seattle has put together this season.

Currently, the Colts are riding a four-game losing streak and are in the hunt for the NFL Playoffs as the No. 8 seed.

Meanwhile, the 49ers are the six-seed in the NFC, but are on the tail of the Los Angeles Rams for the lead in the NFC West.

With both teams playing for positions in the postseason, expect a gritty game on prime time.
