49ers-Commanders trade pitch swaps star WRs for one another to solve contract issues

The San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders each have a bit of WR1 drama.

In San Fran, Brandon Aiyuk's injury status is a bit foggy. In D.C., Terry McLaurin is seeking a new contract.

Aiyuk already got paid, about $30 million per year, but maybe the 49ers want to move off of that. And maybe the Commanders wouldn't mind finding someone other than the potential holdout McLaurin.

SI's Grant Cohn proposes the two teams trade them for one another.

"McLaurin is older than Aiyuk, but he's also faster than Aiyuk and might have a better relationship with the quarterback," Cohn writes. "I'm guessing McLaurin would love to play for the 49ers if they extend him. And I'm guessing Aiyuk would love to play with Daniels and Deebo Samuel in Washington."

The biggest irony of the whole deal would be having Aiyuk rejoin Samuel after Deebo was just traded to Washington earlier in the offseason.

Most football fans would likely consider McLaurin a better player than Aiyuk, but in doing this deal, Washington would know what contract it was acquiring, while San Francisco would still then have to reach extension terms with McLaurin.

There's no indication that such a deal is imminent, but it's intriguing in the way it has two win-now teams making a move with veterans.

Most NFL trades seem to be one pricy veteran for a draft pick. But two star receivers pretty much in their prime being swapped for one another would be a cool outcome.
