49ers' brutal Week 1 statistic highlights how bad their recent draft classes have been

The San Francisco 49ers are entering their Week 1 matchup overseas against the Los Angeles Rams with a few key players out due to injury.

But to make matters worse, Alfred Collins sustained a season-ending injury while the team was already in Australia, and they will now be down another key early draft pick.

Collins' injury prompted Josh Dubow of The Associated Press to share an absolutely brutal statistic for the 49ers in Week 1. Somehow, from 2020 through 2025, the 49ers will have just one player drafted in the first two rounds active Thursday night.

"Renardo Green will be the only 49ers player drafted by the team in the first or second round from 2020-25 active for the season opener," Dubow reports.

Not including this year's draft class, the 49ers will be without all but one of their first- and second-round picks in this Week 1 matchup against the NFC West rival Los Angeles Rams.

From the 2025 NFL Draft, first-round pick Mykel Williams is beginning the year out due to injury and will miss at least four games. Collins, their second-rounder, is going to miss the entire 2026 season.

First-rounder Ricky Pearsall is also going to miss the entire 2026 NFL season. Fellow 2024 draft pick, second-round cornerback Renardo Green, is the only player set to play in this season opener.

The 49ers didn't draft any first-rounders in 2023 and 2022, though second-round pick Drake Jackson from the 2022 class could've been active. But he's no longer a part of the team just five years after being drafted.

Looking back to 2021, Trey Lance and Aaron Banks aren't on the 49ers anymore, leaving the 49ers with another draft class without a first- or second-rounder active for Week 1.

Finally, back in 2020, the 49ers took Javon Kinlaw and Brandon Aiyuk in Round 1. Kinlaw is with the Washington Commanders, and while Aiyuk is still with the 49ers, he's been away from the team amid his frustrations with the team.

Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel, both set to be active in Week 1, are the only players the 49ers have drafted in the first or second rounds in the last seven years, not including the 2026 draft class, to be active in Week 1 outside of Green.

This highlights just how bad the 49ers have drafted, and how much bad luck they've gotten as well. Injury issues and poor play have led to this brutal statistic, highlighting the team's major draft struggles in recent years.
