San Francisco’s pursuit of another championship has stretched across generations. Since lifting the Lombardi Trophy in 1994, the franchise has repeatedly reached the brink without closing the deal.
The years that followed Steve Young’s final triumph brought constant change under center. Different quarterbacks stepped into the role, but none delivered the result.
Brock Purdy now occupies that position. Named the starter in 2022, he has already taken the 49ers deep, reaching both the conference championship stage and the Super Bowl. While the ending has remained the same, his development curve suggests further progress is still possible.
Teammate Fred Warner believes the separating factor is how Purdy approaches the position. During an appearance on a podcast hosted by Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, the veteran linebacker highlighted Purdy’s grasp of situational football.
“He does everything at an elite level, in my opinion,” Warner said. “You really saw him come to life. I think he played the best ball out of any team quarterback in the league down the stretch. I’m happy he’s on my team. He definitely is gonna get us a Bowl.”
Grades reinforce Purdy’s standing among the league’s most reliable starters
Independent evaluation supports that internal confidence. PFF assessed every NFL quarterback situation ahead of the 2026 season and ranked the 49ers 25th in urgency, signaling stability rather than concern.
Analyst John Kosko highlighted Purdy’s 2025 performance and the dependable play of backup Mac Jones, noting minimal pressure to address the position.
Skepticism around Kyle Shanahan’s system persists, but Kosko argued Purdy has exceeded what previous starters produced in the same framework. Over the past three seasons,
Purdy’s 90.6 overall PFF grade ranks tied for eighth leaguewide alongside Patrick Mahomes. The comparison reflects efficiency rather than improvisation, built on accuracy and a low rate of costly mistakes.
Injuries limited Purdy’s 2025 regular season to nine starts, yet he went 7–2, totaling 2,167 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while posting a 100.5 passer rating for the third time in four years. His postseason numbers dipped, with a 68.3 rating across two games, but the broader profile suggests consistency within the offense.
