49ers’ Brock Purdy contract extension for $52 million per year takes the spotlight after NFL Draft

It's time.

The San Francisco 49ers can't wait any longer. Brock Purdy's contract extension is officially in the spotlight following the conclusion of the NFL Draft on Saturday.

Nothing was going to happen in the draft to change Purdy's future. San Francisco has to pay him if they want to keep their franchise quarterback around for the long term.

The going rate? It'll likely be around $52 million per year.

Right now, the 10th-highest paid QB in the NFL is Jalen Hurts, at just below $52M.

Reports when Purdy showed up to offseason activities this week indicated negotiations were going well in the $50 million ballpark.

Given humanity's fascination with round numbers, don't be surprised if Purdy's camp wants him to be a top-10 paid QB, rather than a top-12 paid QB.

49ers leader Jed York already said earlier this offseason that they know they'll have to pay Purdy.

All along, it's been more of a question of when, not if.

The time is officially here.

It's even more important for the 49ers to get the Purdy deal done so then they can figure out how much money they have for linebacker Fred Warner and tight end George Kittle, who are also due for extensions.

Purdy should be first up. He plays the most important position in sports, and he'll get a nine-figure deal for five or six years.

The 49ers can't afford to wait any longer. The draft is in the past, and Purdy is their present and future.
