49ers' $120 million All-Pro WR cut candidate should be of interest to Commanders

The San Francisco 49ers appear to have hit their breaking point with their 28-year-old All-Pro wide receiver.

According to NFL insider Jason L. Canfora, the 49ers are on the verge of releasing the Arizona State product, allowing him to explore free agency.

“The San Francisco 49ers, after a protracted and personal battle with receiver Brandon Aiyuk, are finally prepared to move on from him,” Canfora reported Monday.

"Aiyuk recently aimed the only franchise he has ever known on social media, and the situation between him and team officials has been festering since prior to last season, when they were at odds about his injury rehab in the aftermath of a massive contract extension."

“It’s been widely known throughout the league for quite some time that Aiyuk had no future with the 49ers, and any attempts to land anything for him have been undermined by his off-field behavior, including filming himself driving erratically and going well over the speed limit.”

The Commanders, who have been linked to Aiyuk since the beginning of the offseason, now have a perfect opportunity to reunite Jaylen Daniels with his former college star teammate.

Terry McLaurin is a solidified No. 1 receiving option, but without surrounding him with a viable supporting cast, it’s hard to imagine Washington’s passing game being anywhere near elite.

Aiyuk, who’s been inactive since Week 8 of the 2024-25 season, is an explosive deep and intermediate threat who’s accumulated 4,305 passing yards and 25 touchdowns in the first 69 games of his NFL career.

Simply put, the Commanders would be silly to ignore Aiyuk on the free agent market.
