40-year-old AEW star turns heel; forms a new faction

A popular AEW star shockingly turned heel during his recent match and formed a new faction with a tag team. The star had been teasing a turn for quite some time.

The 40-year-old AEW star, Jay Lethal, surprisingly turns heel. Lethal has been with All Elite Wrestling since 2021 and has been a consistent performer on Tony Khan-owned Ring of Honor for the past few months as well. He has also been teasing a heel turn for the past few weeks.

On the recent episode of Ring of Honor, Jay Lethal teamed up with the ROH World Champion, Bandido, to take on Blake Christian and Lee Johnson of The Swirl tag team. In a shocking moment from the match, Lethal refused to give a tag to Bandido, turning heel in the process. He also attacked the masked star and joined forces with The Swirl to form a new trio.

Former WWE writer on AEW star's disappointing booking

The former WWE writer, Freddie Prinze Jr. expressed his frustrations over the AEW star, Jay Lethal, being underutilized back in 2022. Speaking on Wrestling With Freddie, Prinze Jr. said that Lethal is not being used properly despite being money:

"I don't know what they're doing with this guy 'cause he's money on the microphone, so they gave him a manager. Doesn't make sense to me. He's money in the ring, so he never wrestles in like a legit match, although this was legit 'cause Darby [Allin] is one of the guys they've been building on. Like Ricky Starks, I don't know why they aren't pushing these guys as singles and pushing them seriously. Both guys can wrestle, both guys are good on the microphone, and both guys have zero direction in the company," Freddie said.

Meanwhile, Jay Lethal has yet to win a singles or multi-person title in All Elite Wrestling. Only time will tell what his creative direction is after the recent heel turn.
