John Cena lost his retirement match in shocking fashion, tapping out to Gunther's sleeper hold. This was the first time in over 20 years that Cena had tapped out to a submission, the last time being in February 2004, when Kurt Angle defeated him via the Ankle Lock.
For someone portrayed as nearly invincible and embodying the spirit of never giving up, it was unbelievable to see Cena lose his final match by tapping out. While no wrestler is completely immune to such a finish, some have remained protected to a greater extent.
In this listicle, we will take a look at four wrestlers other than John Cena who have rarely ever tapped out to a submission.
4. Goldberg
The WCW legend retired from in-ring competition earlier this year and was also defeated by Gunther via submission in his retirement match. However, Goldberg passed out while in the sleeper hold as his career came to a close.
The former World Heavyweight Champion was nearly invincible during his prime and has rarely ever tapped out to a submission hold.
3. Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns is the biggest star in WWE right now and has been protected significantly ever since his debut with The Shield. He was pushed to the top after the faction disbanded, and achieved a whole new level of superstardom as The Tribal Chief.
Reigns briefly used a guillotine choke as his finisher during his early days as The Tribal Chief, but has since used it sparingly. On the other hand, he has rarely ever been defeated by submission, and has almost never tapped out to a hold to end a match.
2. Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar has cemented his status as one of the most dominant and intimidating WWE Superstars of all-time. The Beast Incarnate has destroyed many WWE icons, and most famously broke The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak by handing him his first loss at the 30th edition of the Show of Shows.
While many stars, such as Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and John Cena, can claim they beat Lesnar, few have done so via submission. Among the few, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit are the only two who can claim they made The Conqueror tap out.
1. The Undertaker
The Phenom is one of the most iconic WWE Superstars of all-time. His character was also heavily protected in finishes, as he rarely ever tapped out. The Undertaker, like most other stars on this list, was mostly defeated via pinfall over the course of his legendary career.
One of the few times The Undertaker was made to tap out was against Kurt Angle. The Olympic gold medalist has made a number of WWE legends tap out, and The Deadman was one of them. He also tapped out at SummerSlam 2015 to a Kimura Lock against Brock Lesnar, but the referee missed it. Lesnar then passed out to the Hell's Gate submission move to give Undertaker the win. However, it remains one of the few times that The Undertaker was made to tap out to a submission.
