Team India suffered a shocking 30-run defeat against South Africa in the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. They are hosting the Proteas for a two-match Test series.

India failed to chase a 124-run target in the final innings. Batting first, South Africa were bowled out for 159 as Jasprit Bumrah starred with a five-wicket haul. In reply, the hosts got to 189, taking a 30-run lead. Simon Harmer was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with four wickets.

In the second essay, South Africa managed to put up a total of 153. They were led by a hard-fought unbeaten 55 from skipper Temba Bavuma. Chasing 124, Shubman Gill and Co. were skittled out for just 93 in 35 overs, enduring an embarrassing loss.

On that note, let us take a look at four unwanted records created by the hosts during their defeat to South Africa in the first Test.

#4 Joint second-lowest aggregate in an innings by Indian openers in a home Test

Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul failed to get going in the fourth innings. Jaiswal was dismissed for a four-ball duck while Rahul managed just one run off six balls. Together, the duo aggregated just one run in the innings.

This is the joint-second lowest aggregate in an innings by Indian openers in a home Test. Jaiswal and Rahul equalled Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, who aggregated just one run against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 2010. The record for the lowest aggregate (0) is held by ML Jaisimha (0), Indrajitsinhji (0) against Australia in Chennai in 1964.

#3 Third-lowest score in the fourth innings of a Test match

93 is India's third-lowest total in the fourth innings of a Test match. It was a poor effort from the batting unit as they could not even cross the 100-run mark. Their second-lowest total in the fourth innings of a Test is 83, which came against England in Chennai in 1977.

Their lowest total in the fourth innings of a Test is 81, which came against the West Indies at Bridgetown in 1997.

#2 Lost two Test matches at home while chasing targets under 150

The defeat against South Africa was the second instance where the hosts lost a Test match at home while chasing a target under 150. The first such instance came during the Wankhede Test against New Zealand in 2024.

Chasing 147 in the final innings, the hosts were bundled out for 121 and lost the match by 25 runs. Notably, no other team has lost a single Test at home while chasing a target under 150 in this century. Their poor record at the Eden Gardens continued, having successfully chased only one target in excess of 100 runs in 13 attempts.

#1 Second-lowest target India have failed to chase

124 against South Africa at the Eden Gardens is the second-lowest target that India have failed to chase down in their Test cricket history. The lowest target that they failed to chase in the format was 120 against the West Indies at Bridgetown in 1997.

147 against New Zealand in 2024 at the Wankhede is the third-lowest target that they were unable to chase. 176 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2015 takes the fourth spot, while 193 against England at Lord's in 2025 makes up for the top five lowest targets that they have failed to chase.
