WWE colour commentator Wade Barrett recently said that he has officially retired from in-ring competition. He last wrestled in 2016. Since 2020, he has actively focused on making commentary outside the ring, along with Michael Cole and Joe Tessitore.

However, retirements in WWE are often taken with a pinch of salt. There have been numerous instances when superstars who have announced their retirement have returned for special matches. Barrett, too, can return for one special last match for WWE.

In this listicle, we shall throw light on opponents he can square off against in his last match.

#4 Drew McIntyre

Drew McIntyre would certainly be WWE's first choice as Wade Barrett's last opponent, if the latter ever decides to return to the ring. The two share a long working relationship as they were former FCW Tag Team Champions.

They were about to clash last year when McIntyre was in a storyline with CM Punk. WWE even teased Barrett's return to the ring by uploading his video as a Nexus leader on company's official YouTube channel. However, the match could not take place because The Scottish Warrior was involved in a rivalry with Punk.

McIntyre is still a heel, and Barrett still commentates on Monday Night RAW. After finishing his storyline with Cody Rhodes, the two could be brought together for one classic feud. A WrestleMania event would be the perfect event for these two greats to lock horns for one last time.

#3 John Cena (if he enters the Last Time Is Now Tournament)

John Cena and Wade Barrett share an epic history. These two legends were involved in a fierce battle back in 2010, when Barrett made his main roster debut as the leader of The Nexus. After squashing Cena on numerous occasions, the two crossed each other's paths at SummerSlam, where Cena's team defeated Barrett's heel group.

That was the death knell for King Barrett's, one of the hottest heel factions in WWE. Some even say that the company's decision to bury The Nexus at SummerSlam at the hands of John Cena was a wrong move.

Be that as it may. Since these two share a history, a final clash can still happen. All it would require from Wade Barrett is his entry into the 16-man tournament as a participant. He can beat other wrestlers and then finally face Cena in the final match at Saturday Night's Main Event (SNME) on December 13, in Washington, DC.

#2 Sheamus

Sheamus is another superstar with whom Wade Barrett can get inside the wrestling ring for the final time. They have faced each other on numerous occasions in the past.

Moreover, these two were also part of the now-defunct heel group, The League of Nations. Along with Alberto Del Rio and Rusev, the four were part of a faction that exhibited anti-U.S. sentiments. However, the idea didn't click with the fans, and the faction was disbanded within five months.

Sheamus is still with WWE today, while Wade Barrett is part of the commentary team. It won't take much by the creative team to set up a match between these two legends at WrestleMania 42 next year.

#1 Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther

Gunther is another superstar against whom Wade Barrett can get inside the ring. Barrett's in-ring return was highly anticipated earlier this year, when Gunther had attacked Pat McAfee on RAW.

Later, Gunther had severely beaten up McAfee in a one-on-one match at Backlash. Wade Barrett was absent from the commentary team on RAW those days, and many fans expected him to return and take out Gunther. However, nothing of that sort happened.

While Gunther isn't around since SummerSlam, Wade Barrett can tease a rivalry with the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion. The two can then go on to exchange fists at WrestleMania next year.
