The NHL’s free-agent frenzy arrives on July 1, but it may not be the most exciting frenzy we’ve seen – at least, when it comes to the league’s salary cap era.
The salary cap ceiling is rising to $104 million in the 2026-27 season, which means most, if not all, teams have increased financial flexibility. One team in particular – the Detroit Red Wings – will be fascinating to watch this summer to see which needs they attempt to address.
The biggest need the Red Wings have at the moment appears to be the pending hole in the lineup that’s going to be left by captain and top-line center Dylan Larkin. The veteran center has requested a trade out of Detroit, and we all should know by now how valuable a first-line center is in today’s NHL.
So if Wings GM Steve Yzerman does follow through on Larkin’s trade request, Detroit is going to have to acquire a center one way or another.

There really isn’t an equivalent to Larkin in the free-agent field. But would Columbus Blue Jackets center Boone Jenner be an option for Yzerman? Jenner really isn’t a No. 1 center, but if Detroit gives Jenner the financial payday no other team is willing to match or improve on, a fit between Jenner and the Red Wings is plausible.
Otherwise, the Wings need as much help on offense as they can get. Detroit ranked 22nd in goals scored this past season at 2.91 goals for per game, and losing Larkin is going to put an even bigger dent in the Red Wings’ ship. So, literally any UFA player who can help them score is going to be a target for Yzerman & Co.
Maybe that’s New York Islanders winger Anders Lee or even Blue Jackets winger Mason Marchment. The Red Wings can’t afford to be picky and choosy with the talent they bring in this summer. Whoever they can find who doesn’t want a terrible and obvious overpayment on their next salary should be considered by the Wings.

That attitude extends to the goalie the Red Wings need to sign. Veteran John Gibson is under contract for the 2026-27 campaign, but after that, there’s no clear candidate to be Gibson’s tandem-mate.
The UFA goalie market isn’t very robust, but maybe Yzerman takes a chance on Pittsburgh Penguins veteran Stuart Skinner or Carolina Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen. There’s no goalie available who doesn’t have some flaw. Still, the trick for Yzerman will be finding a relatively cheap goaltender who can lean on their experience and veteran know-how to be reliable between the pipes.
Regardless, the Red Wings have $29 million in salary cap space, and they can’t waste another season with no Stanley Cup playoff hockey. So there’s no reasonable excuse for Yzerman not to spend every available dollar to push his team back into the post-season for the first time since 2016. Yzerman can no longer talk about patience with his group, as another season without playoff games in Motown will almost assuredly lead to Yzerman’s firing.
It’s been a full decade without playoff games in Detroit, and while Yzerman has added important pieces to the Red Wings’ puzzle, the blunt truth is that the Wings need many more pieces before they can be a legitimate Cup threat. Although Detroit has the financial wherewithal to acquire difference-making players, there’s no assurance the Red Wings will be able to do so.
The Wings had an extremely long stretch where they were the undisputed class of the NHL. But those days feel like forever ago, and Red Wings fans have grown exhausted by all the disappointment. Detroit has to quickly rise out of the ashes of seasons past and push through the Atlantic Division standings, because any further letdowns in Wings Land will result in Yzerman’s dismissal and the start of a new generation for the Original Six franchise.
